Apple to Supply Only Fast

Apple has informed accessory producers that it will now exclusively supply them with its fast-charging Apple Watch charging module, discontinuing the older, slower charger. Under Apple’s MFi program, accessory producers are required to obtain an official charging module from Apple. This is why all Apple Watch chargers have the same iconic white puck design.Initially, Apple faced shortages of the newer charging modules, which led some vendors to release products with the slower-charging module due to supply constraints. As a result, consumers had to purchase charging accessories that did not have the latest specifications.According to an anonymous source from an accessory vendor, Apple has notified them that it is prioritizing the production of newer modules with fast-charging capabilities. This updated module was introduced along with the Apple Watch Series 7, which added fast charging to the wearable device lineup.Accessory manufacturers have until August 31, 2023 to submit product plans that include the original slow-charging module for Apple’s approval. However, after September 30, 2023, all new accessories will be required to use the updated fast charging module.For consumers, this means that there will be a wide range of new fast-charging Apple Watch accessories available in the market as Apple addresses its supply issues. It is expected that suppliers may charge higher prices for accessories using the fast charging module.Additionally, Apple will offer both MFM and Qi2 wireless charging modules for its iPhone. It remains unclear why manufacturers would choose MFM modules over the more affordable Qi2 modules. Apple has also contributed its MagSafe technology to the Wireless Power Consortium, which will incorporate a MagSafe-style ring of magnets and support up to 15W of wireless power.Recently, Apple has slightly expanded the MFM specification to allow charging accessories to utilize different charging surfaces beyond the traditional white circle design.
